Why the London / New York Overlap is the Best 3 Hours of the Day

If you only get to trade one window, this is it. 8am to 11am Eastern. Here's why.

Two sessions, one window

From 8am to 11am Eastern, London traders are wrapping up their afternoon and New York traders are running their morning. Both desks are active, both have inventory to move, and the result is the deepest liquidity of the 24-hour cycle.

What that means in practice

  • Tight spreads. EUR/USD spreads compress to ~0.2 pips during this window. Outside it, you can see 1-2 pip widening.
  • Clean breakouts. Range expansion from the Asian session resolves here. Stops are real stops, not stop runs.
  • News catalysts. US economic data (CPI, NFP, retail sales) drops at 8:30am Eastern. London is still trading; New York has just opened.

For Opus crypto traders

The same window matters for BTC and ETH, even though crypto trades 24/7. Spot volume on Binance/Coinbase peaks during NY morning, and derivative funding rates reset around the same time.
